Ramirez is the R. Stuart Dickson Professor of Psychology and founding director of ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø’s neuroscience program.

His election makes him only the second professor from a liberal arts college to hold a top leadership post in the society’s 50-year history.

Ramirez is co-director of SfN’s Neuroscience Scholars Program, which last year was awarded a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. He has mentored more than 150 ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø students who joined his research in recovering memory function through the regrowth or repair of neurons following brain injury. That research could provide insights toward combating Alzheimer’s disease.

In recent years, Ramirez has served as a member of the society’s Professional Development Committee (PDC), chair of the Subcommittee on Mentoring, PDC liaison to Committee for Neuroscience Departments and Programs, and member of the Minority Education Training and Professional Advancement Committee.

With 40,000 members in more than 90 countries and 130 chapters worldwide, the SfN is devoted to advancing understanding of the brain and nervous system.
